Implementation of Solid Waste Management By-Laws

JAMMU, Nov 8: Chief Justice, High Court of J&K, Justice Gita Mittal, who is Patron-in-Chief of J&K Legal Services Authority, reviewed the working of District Legal Service Authorities (DLSAs) with respect to implementation of Solid Waste Management By-Laws and other environmental issues including plantation and water conservation.
The Chief Justice was accompanied by Justice Rajesh Bindal, Executive Chairman J&K SLSA.
The Principal District Judges of all the 22 districts of Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh who are Chairpersons of District Legal Services Authorities alongwith Secretaries of DLSAs participated in the meeting through video conferencing.
The Chief Justice was informed that the significant focus of the Patron-in-Chief and Executive Chairman on green and clean environment is being implemented at the gross root level by organizing several awareness programmes and by launching series of plantation drives with the involvement of students and various departments of UT’s of J&K and Ladakh.
While emphasizing on clean environment, the Chief Justice reiterated that the DLSAs should ensure the implementation of Solid Waste Management By-Laws by making the people aware that littering is an offence and telling them about the penalties that can be imposed for indulging in littering.
The Chief Justice also issued instructions to all the DLSAs to start the Solid Waste Management drives from their respective court premises, so that the people visiting the courts are sensitized about the concept of solid waste management.
Justice Rajesh Bindal, Executive Chairman J&K SLSA while speaking on the occasion directed the participants to introduce the concept of plantation of fruit bearing and wild trees through seed balls by broadcasting the seed balls in inaccessible areas where plantation is not possible in conventional ways.
M. K Sharma, Member Secretary (designate) J&K SLSA informed the Patron-in-Chief and Executive Chairman that about 700 camps have been organized across J&K on Solid Waste Management & Environmental issues and thousands of samplings were planted in the plantation drives held at various places.
He further informed that all the Secretaries of DLSAs have been nominated as members of Special Task Force(STF) constituted in all the districts on the directions of National Green Tribunal (NGT).
