Chhari Pujan associated with annual Amarnath yatra performed in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Chanting vedic hymn, a large number of devotees participated in ‘Chhari-Pujan’ at Shri Amareshwar temple Dashnami Akhara near here this evening.

Associated with annual Amarnath yatra, Chhari-Pujan was performed this evening with religious fervor and gaiety chanting Vedic Hymn by Mahant Deependra Giri along with Sadhus who had come from across the country and in the presence of large number devotees.

Mahant Giri said as described in scriptures, this is an important ritual to be performed traditionally on ‘Nag-Panchami’ (Shravan Shukla Paksha Panchmi) before leaving for the main course of pilgrimage.

In the pre 90s Sadhus carrying Chhari-Mubarak, holy silver Mace o Lord Shiva, used to start their journey on foot for Holy Amarnath shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas immediately after this Pujan.

Having night halts at Pampore, Bijbehara, Anantnag, Martand, Aishmuquam, Pahalgam, Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni, Chhari-Mubarak would reach Holy Cave of Swami Amarnath ji on ‘Shravan-Purnima’ the ‘Raksha-Bandhan’ day. However, after 90s the Chhari is being taken in a vehicle to Pahalgam after brief halts at different places on way. (AGENCIES)
