Change in policing system will not control crime: Mayawati

LUCKNOW: Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) supremo and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati has  questioned the change in the policing system in Lucknow and Noida and blamed the political system for deterioration of law and order in the state.

Reacting to the Yogi Adityanath government’s move to introduce police commissioner system in the two districts, the BSP president in a tweet said, “Changing the police system in some places would not at all change the situation. We will have to counter the politics behind action against the criminals and it could be the only way to control crime in the state. State government should look into it and take action.”

It was in 2010 during the previous Mayawati regime in the state when police commissioner system was discussed but it was dropped after the strong IAS lobby opposed it as the system would curtail their powers in the district.

Meanwhile, UP DGP O P Singh has thanked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for bringing in the new system.

“Thanks Yogiji for his historic decision on the Commissionerate system. With this comes greater responsibility to deliver. We are committed to better policing that is required to deal with emerging challenges in metropolitan areas,” the DGP tweeted on Monday. (AGENCIES)
