Srinagar, Jan 9: Admi-tting dearth of cops in the department, Traffic Police today announced change in city traffic plan from tomorrow onwards on trial basis and sought people’s cooperation to make it successful.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Fayaz Ahmad Lone, told a press conference that there would be two-way traffic from Bemina, Qamarwari and Tengpora on trial-basis and ahead of Darbar Move the plan would be revisited. As of now, the traffic on these routes is one-way.
“I appeal people to cooperate because the traffic would be slow on these routes… but it will be convenient because otherwise they have to travel more,” he said. The SSP however said that the traffic on Rambagh route would continue one-sided.
He admitted that there is dearth of traffic cops and said they have sought “shift-system” in their department from the Government. “Definitely there is shortage of cops. We are taking up with the Government again with regard to shift system that prevails in police. Our men are working from 8 am to 8 pm and it is affecting their efficiency,” he said.
The SSP expressed hope that Government will give share to them from the newly-recruited SPOs in the Police Department to increase manpower in Traffic Department. He announced that they have asked for setting up of 28 new bus stops but the recent unrest in Kashmir hampered the process.
