Centre mulling overhaul of amnesty policy for militants

NEW DELHI, Mar 25:
The Centre is considering a virtual overhaul of the policy of amnesty for militants in the wake of the arrest of former Kashmir militant Liyaqat by the Delhi police last week.
This would cover militants not only in Jammu and Kashmir but also those in the north east and Maoists.
“We will have to see the larger vision of rehabilitation and work out a new policy. It’s time to work out (rework) the amnesty policy, how it can be done better,” official sources said today.
The comments by officials assume significance in the context of the arrest of former Hizbul Muhahideen terroist Liyaqat by the Delhi police on Saturday. The militant had crossed over to India through the Nepal border under a policy of rehabilitation of former militants who surrender to the authorities. (PTI)
