CEC seeks J&K help on HP polls

DEHRADUN, Oct 17:
Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath today sought the help of Uttarakhand, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir to ensure free and fair elections in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.
Sampath, who interacted with senior officials of these States through video conferencing, asked them to step up vigil along their borders with Himachal Pradesh.
Assuring the CEC of all help, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Alok Kumar Jain and DGP Satyavrat Bansal said special police pickets will be set up at nine places in two districts of Uttarakhand bordering Himachal Pradesh to keep vigil on potential wrongdoers.
Bansal said as requested by Himachal Pradesh authorities 1,200 Home Guards will be despatched to beef up security in view of the coming polls.
Uttarakhand chief election officer Radha Raturi said the list of voters in areas close to Himachal Pradesh have been sent to the State authorities to help them tally it with their own and prevent any duplication. (PTI)
