* Seeks work on geothermal energy project

JAMMU, Apr 24: Chief Executive Councilor (CEC) of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Rigzin Spalbar today brought to the notice of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah the complete absence of choice of streams and subjects in the upgraded Higher Secondary Schools during the last few years in different parts of Leh district.
In a letter to Mr Omar, the CEC said, “the up-gradation of the High Schools to Higher Secondary Schools was done to provide education facility at door step of students of far flung and backward areas of the district. However, the students are facing problems of choice of stream of their interest and are forced to either opt for other subjects or have to come to Leh which has resulted in overflow of both the Higher Secondary Schools of Leh town with students from other catchment areas”.
The CEC also mentioned in the letter about the resentments projected by the parents as well as student community time and again against the non introduction of all streams with full subjects in newly upgraded Higher Secondary Schools. He informed CM of the number of posts of streams /subjects shown against each to be urgently created to facilitate the students to avail the choice of the subjects– 10 posts for commerce in 10 Higher Secondary Schools, 14 posts of Environmental Science for 14 Higher Secondary schools, 13 posts of Computer Science for 13 Higher Secondary School, 12 posts of Geography for 12 Higher Secondary School and 14 posts of Boti language for 14 Higher Secondary School.
He urged CM to direct the concerned department to process the case for creation of posts in the Higher Secondary Schools of Leh district.
Meanwhile, Mr Spalbar called on the Minister of State for Power, Viqar Rasool and had a detailed discussion on the present scenario of Alchi Hydel Project in the aftermath of commissioning of its 1st 15MW Unit last December.
The CEC urged the Minister to take necessary measures for early handing and taking over of the completed transmission lines to electrify the left out villages and hamlets that comes under the covering range of Alchi Project.
“With the commissioning of other two units of Alchi Power Project, Leh will have surplus power opening a new avenue for generating huge revenue,” asserted Spalbar, adding that in order to check the misuse of power, metering system needs to be made mandatory for which the consumers themselves have been pressing hard.
The CEC further urged the Minister for initiating work on Puga Geothermal Energy Project terming it as a highly power potential project.
The Minister assured CEC for issuing necessary order for resolving the issues and to send power meters for Leh district soon.
