SRINAGAR: A Srinagar-bound car was hijacked by a group of unidentified persons on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district on Tuesday, sparking an alert of a suspected suicide attack ahead of Independence Day.
However, the vehicle was recovered today and one person arrested.
In a complete anti-climax, Anantnag Police traced the vehicle to a person in Pulwama who allegedly runs a business of stolen cars.
Immediately after the vehicle was hijacked, SSP Junaid formed a crack team to trace it as it was supposed to be heading towards Srinagar.
A high alert was also sounded in the State.
Police sources said that it was the handiwork of a gang of car thieves who hijack vehicles on the national highway.
Some persons travelling in the car had told the driver to get down and sped away with the vehicle on the highway in Ramban district yesterday, Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Rajesh Kumar told PTI.
The car bearing a Punjab registration number was being driven by one Karanveer Singh of Pathankot in Punjab.
Singh told police that the vehicle had four people on board. (AGENCIES)
