Cantt Board election on Apr 30

JAMMU, Mar 13: As per a notification by the President Cantonment Board of Jammu, election to elect representatives of the local body shall be held on April 30, 2023.
The date of filing nomination papers before the Returning Officer has been fixed by the Board authorities for March 28, 2023 from 1000 hrs to 1600 hrs and scrutiny of the nomination papers shall be done on March 31, 2023 from 1200 hrs to 1600 hrs by the Returning Officer or his nominee at Cantonment Board office.
The date of withdrawal of candidature without forfeiture of the security deposit will be April 1, 2023 up-to 1600 hrs, if the nominations were scrutinized by the Returning Officer himself, and on April 4, 2023 up-to 1600 hrs, if the nominations were scrutinized by the nominee of Returning Officer.
On April 8, 2023, list of candidates elected unopposed and those contesting the election in each of the seven Wards shall be published at 1600 hrs and election symbols shall also be allotted the same day while the polls will be held on April 30, 2023 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Counting of votes and declaration of results shall be done on April 30, 2023 after completion of polling or on next day that is on May 1, 2023.
An elected member of the Board in last polls informed that these elections take place normally after five years but now these are being held after about eight years as last time these elections were held in the year 2015.
“During the delayed period, one nominated member Bharat Bhushan—a local BJP leader was there to look into the issues of the residents of Cantonment area,” he maintained.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Board is run by Ministry of Defense and residents of the Cantonment area are already paying the Property Tax which along with funding from the Defense Ministry is spend by the local body for development works in the Cantonment Board area.
Of the seven elected members of the Cantonment Board one will be later on elected as Vice President of the Board while President of the Board remains the Deputy General Officer Commanding (GOC) Satwari—a Brigadier rank officer of the Army.
Another elected member of the last tenure informed that sanitation, cleanliness, lanes-drains, garbage disposal and other such issues are resolved by the elected members of the Board while electricity and water supply in the Cantonment area remains the affairs of J&K Government.
Areas falling under Cantonment Board Jammu include Satwari, Jawahar Nagar, areas adjoining Jammu Airport, some parts of Belicharana, some parts of Raipur Satwari, Govind Nagar, some areas of Chatha etc.
