Cancer is curable if detected in early stages: Dr Showket

JAMMU, Nov 18: Dr Nadeem Showket, Medical Oncologist, Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu today maintained that cancer is curable if it is detected in early stages.
Dr Showket, who recently joined Department of Medical Oncology and is 1st Medical oncologist for GMC Jammu, further maintained that even at later stages, patient can hope for survival for long. “Advancement in medical sciences has now made it possible to manage cancer through chronic treatment and can provide longer life of up to 2-3 years for terminal patients also”, he added.
Addressing a press conference, Dr Showket informed the media persons that the J&K has an estimated 29841, 30855 and 31899 cancer patients for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively while for the same years, estimated 4863, 5028 and 5198 cancer patients, respectively died.
He said that cancer is on rise in Kashmir, adding, 15 percent of cancers are hereditary while most of cancers are man-made and there is no miracle cure for any cancer. Dr Showket said that many cancer incidences can be prevented by adopting preventive measures like quitting tobacco, limited alcohol take and having active lifestyle. He also advised to avoid taking burnt or grilled food, as it contains chemical nitrosamines, which is carcinogenic.
