Srinagar, Sept 17: A passenger bus was today set on fire by unidentified persons inside erstwhile General Bus Stand Batamaloo here in city centre, transporters said.
They said that some unidentified persons set on fire a bus bearing registration number JKO2AE-0548 today at around 11:00 am when they were protesting against Government’s decision of shifting the Bus Stand to Parimpora on city outskirts. “The bus belonged to Mushtaq Ahmad Lisa, who is chairman of Kashmir Transporters Welfare Association,” they added.

While transporters informed Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) about the incident, they could not save it from destruction. The transporters said even as the F&ES headquarters are five minute walking distance from Bus Stand but “it could not serve purpose for them today and fire tenders arrived much late”. They alleged that today’s incident is conspiracy to “scare us” as they are “refusing to budge before Government decision of shifting the Bus Stand”.
When contacted, a police official said that they have registered a case into the incident and started investigation. “The owner of the bus told us that some persons set it alight. We are ascertaining all the facts,” he said.
