JAMMU, May 4: The Border Security Force (BSF) tonight detected a cross-border tunnel near Chak Faquira post in Samba sector, about 150 metres from the International Border (IB), which might have been used or was to be used by the militants for infiltration into this side to cause terror activities.
Detection of tunnel came less than a fortnight after two fidayeen from Pakistan, who infiltrated from forward village of Supwal in Samba sector, reached Sunjuwan and carried out a terror attack there on April 22 before being eliminated by the security personnel.
Following disclosures by the harbourers of fidayeen that they had crossed the International Border in Samba sector to reach Sunjuwan, the BSF launched massive drive to detect tunnels on the border which might have been used by the militants for infiltration from Pakistan as border fencing was found intact.
During anti-tunnelling drive, the BSF detected a tunnel near its Chak Faquira post in Samba sector. The tunnel was 150 metres inside the International Border and had about 900 metres distance from Pakistan’s Chaman Khurd Post also known as Fiaz Post.
“A small opening found in general area near fencing in Samba suspected to be a tunnel. However, due to darkness further search could not be carried out. Detailed search will be conducted early in the morning at first light,” a brief statement issued by the BSF late tonight said.
It added that further details will be known only tomorrow morning.
Sources couldn’t say immediately as to whether the fidayeen who carried out terror attack at Sunjuwan on April 22 ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jammu had infiltrated from the same tunnel or not.
“As the militants are dead, it will be difficult to say whether they crossed using this tunnel,” sources said. They added that the truck operators had picked up fidayeen from quite some distance from the border and dropped them at Sunjuwan.
The fidayeen were gunned down by Police, Army and CRPF after about five-hour long encounter in which a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) ASI was martyred while 10 security personnel were injured.
It may be mentioned that the BSF had earlier also detected a number of tunnels along the International border from Jammu to Kathua sectors which had been used by the militants for infiltration.
Police intercepted militants many times at Nagrota, Jhajjar Kotli etc on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway who had infiltrated from the International Border and were heading to Kashmir.
Two truck operators arrested by Jammu and Kashmir Police for transporting two fidayeen from Samba to Sunjuwan have also confessed that they dropped four militants from Samba to South Kashmir in January this year.
