Both Jammu, Kashmir regions to have independent AIIMS Campuses

JAMMU, June 9: The BJP Government at the Centre has acceded the demand of both Jammu and Kashmir divisions for setting up of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which had become bone of contention between the two regions and headache for the PDP-BJP coalition Government.
According to highly placed sources, the Central Government has agreed that both Jammu and Kashmir regions would have separate and independent Campuses of AIIMS.
“There will be one Campus in Jammu and another in Kashmir. Both will be independent Campuses with all Departments, faculties and all other health facilities available with the AIIMS. This way no region will feel discriminated,’’ they said.
They added that detailed modalities on independent Campuses of the AIIMS would be worked out by the health experts once the formal announcement by the Government of India is made. The announcement, according to sources, is on the cards and could be made anytime now.
Sources said the decision for two Campuses of AIIMS for both the regions was taken by the BJP Government in New Delhi after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned from Bangladesh and the senior BJP leaders from Jammu and Kashmir briefed on strong resentment in Jammu over neglect of the region with the opening of AIIMS in Kashmir.
Sources said the Prime Minister, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley then took a decision that both Jammu and Kashmir regions would get independent Campuses of the AIIMS.
It may be mentioned here that an agitation is going on in Jammu region over denial of AIIMS to Jammu. The region had observed two bandhs demanding AIIMS.
