Border residents rue slow pace of bunker construction

MENDHAR, Nov 9: Life of border dwellers, particularly those living near the fence along LoC in Mendhar, Balakote, Mankot tehsil of Sub division Mendhar of Poonch District, has become hell due to continuous shelling and in discriminate firing from across the border by Pakistan which affects a dozens of villagers.
Rural Development Department, PWD and R&B had sanctioned individual and community bunkers at Mendhar (168), Balakot (620) and Mankot (350), totaling 1138 bunkers for the protection of these border people. However, construction of these bunkers is going on a very slow pace with the result that not even a single bunker has been fully completed so far.
Locals of Mendhar Sub division, Mohammd Khallel, Aman ulllah, Ashraf Hussain, Aslam Deen and others said that concrete bunkers were necessity of border people at this point of time when Pakistan was targetting civilian areas in its constant ceasefire violations. “We appeal to Government that the construction work of the bunkers be speeded- up for the larger interests of people living just close to the Line of Control,” they said.
Meanwhile, Tehsildar Mendhar, Dr Vikram Raina said that due to constant shelling from across the border, the construction work got delayed for some time. We are committed to complete the construction work as early as possible so that the people affected due to border shelling feel secured, he added.
