Village Defence Guard Scheme (VDGS) having been approved by the Jammu and Kashmir Government following sanction accorded by the Union Home Ministry is yet another step taken to strengthen the security scenario at village levels especially along the border in respect of fighting the proxy war imposed on us by our belligerent neighbour. The scheme has already been declared to be started from August 15 this year. It is hoped with this scheme going to be operational , terror acts inspired and supported from across the border could be effectively stopped and even pre-empted. We know village Defence Committees (VDCs) played a superb role with women members performing heroic deeds in preventing and fighting terror acts and the new scheme (VDGS) was going to replace it.
Sense of self protection, courage and a spirit of fighting back needing to be instilled in the people and organising small group of volunteers and armed civilians in the identified villages shall be undertaken by the VDGS. This will ensure safety, security and protection of the civilians and important installations and vital infrastructure in and around the identified villages. Vigil, watch, keen surveillance , patrolling round the clock and taking proper care and caution are the duties of the members of the Village Defence Guards.
