District Rajouri is one of the backward districts of the State. Strategically speaking, its location is very sensitive. Halfway to Poonch, Rajouri has attained enhanced importance with the opening of the Mughal Road. Its strategic importance will increase considerably once this Mughal Road shortens distance to Kashmir valley by a tunnel proposed somewhere close to the Pir Panchal pass.
The Government has floated a number of schemes and programmes aiming at removing the backwardness of Rajouri. Most importantly, it is in the area of education that the district came under focus. Though a degree college did exist in Rajouri, yet authorities were not satisfied with the state of things and wanted that the students of this backward area should have the full facility of access to higher and professional courses. As a result, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University was incepted in Rajouri some years back. This was a major step in improving educational facility for the student community of the district. In his recent visit to the University, the Chief Minister acquainted himself with immediate needs and requirement of the university. Some decisions were taken on spot. For example, the Chief Minister asked the Transport Minister to provide buses for ferrying students from the town to the university campus. He sanctioned one crore rupees for construction of a modern Guest House of the University.
Addressing the staff of the university and the dignitaries who has assembled on the occasion, the Chief Minister emphasized that we had to adapt ourselves to the needs of our youth who come out of educational institution with degrees but have to wait long years to find employment. Our education has to be job-oriented. As such, universities have the obligation of dovetailing their academic policy to employment policy also. Rajouri would be getting a Medical College soon and the Chief Minister asked the Vice Chancellor of the university to give him a blue print of a Nursing College as well. This is great news for the people of the entire district. We hope that these ambitious plans will materialize sooner than later. At the same time, we hope that the Union Ministry of Railways will revive the plan of rail connectivity between Jammu and Poonch via Rajouri. Undoubtedly, the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri are on the threshold of big leap towards all round development and progress.
