Book on Dal Lake by Prof Anil of SKUAST-Jammu released

JAMMU, Dec 2: “Dal Lake -Reclaiming Lost Glory”, a book by Dr Anil Kumar, Associate Director Research, ACRA, Dhiansar SKUAST- Jammu, was released at International Conference of Indian Weed Society, Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur, in presence of Mildred Xess, G M (NABARD) MP, Dr P K Singh, Director ICAR, DWR and Dr Jonathan Gressel Wis, Israel.
The other dignitaries present on the occasion, included Dr G R Rao, Director, TFRI; Dr V Pratap Singh, president, ISWS and Dr Sushil Kumar, Secretary, ISWS.
According to Dr Kumar, every time while passing through the lake side and seeing tons and tons of algae and other pollutants eating into vitals of this water body, his heart ached. Though nothing could be done individually to ameliotrate its status yet he could not stop himself from atleast showcasing this ever declining stature of this lake to the outside world. Hence began his frequent to Srinagar to identify the reasons for decay in Dal with active participation and coordination from his friends and colleagues from SKUAST-Kashmir.
During the course of research of various aspects of Dal, came to fore the fact that its upkeep and maintaince has boiled down to loot and plunder by the same every people who were assigned the responsibility for its well being.
The book is published as an attempt to understand the major causes of its shrinking from original size of 75sq kms to12 sq kms and the reduction in its average depth from 45ft to 4.5ft presently. The book not only identifies the areas of concern in terms of presence of Weed species, umpteen spread of algae and other sewage disposals wreaking havoc to its biodiversity but also tries to give possible remedial measures via-a-vis chemical control of weeds, policy planning at Govt and Non-Govt levels etc. It also gives an elucidated account of biology and ecology of itenary of Weed flora which inhabit the lake either as submerged, floating or upland species/flora alongwith the management approaches at a threshold level to maintain the sanctity of lake.
