SRINAGAR, Sept 8: Police detained 8 local leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) this morning to foil their protest march against coal block allocation and burnt effigies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government.
Over two dozen local leaders of the BJP led by its central zone president for Kashmir valley, Mohammad Ashraf Reshi, gathered at the Pratap Park in Residency Road area of the city. They were raising slogans against the UPA Government.
Police intercepted them to foil their protest march but not before they burnt the effigy of UPA Government. Police detained 8 of their leaders but were later let off.
Those who were detained include Central Kashmir president of the BJP Mohammad Ashraf Reshi, general secretary Altaf Thakur, vice presidents Sheikh Rashid, Sheikh Bashir and Nazir Ahmad. The protesters were detained and taken to the nearby Kothi Bagh police station.
It may be mentioned here that the Government does not allow holding of protests in Srinagar as prohibitory orders under Section 144 criminal procedure code have been imposed in the city.
