JAMMU, Oct 17: Former Minister and senior National Conference leader, Ajay Sadhotra today said that the BJP Government at the Centre has adopted anti-farmer policies due to which the miseries of the farmers have increased many fold.
He said this while interacting with the farmers during his tour to Sum, Makwal, Haripur, Suanjana, Alora, Prambali, Bakshi de Kothey, Camp, Murarpur, Tikoo Tera, Karwal, Malke Chak, Haripur, Bhure Chak, Sardare Chak, Laxman Pura, Tope, Jawalapur, Kullian and Kullian Manhasa villages of Tehsil Mandal, where he visited to take stock of the losses occurred to the standing paddy crops and vegetable crops due to hailstorm occurred on October 11.
“We are feeling depressed and helpless as there is no body to listen to them. Nobody from the Government is ready to assess our losses. Even we were forced to pay to the Revenue officials for getting our losses assessed and registered”, the farmers told Sadhotra, adding, the Government has mad mockery of the crop insurance scheme.
Farmers’ delegations told Sadhotra that they cannot afford to get their fields cleared of the damaged crops as it involves too much labour. They said if Govt does not want to give them compensation, it should get their fields cleared for next crop.
After the tour, Sadhtora expressed serious concern over the insensitive attitude of Government towards farmers and demanded Rs 10,000 compensation per Kanal to all the farmers whose crops have been damaged due to hailstorm. “Kissan Credit Card should not be the criteria for giving compensation to the farmers and all the farmers should be given compensation as about 50% farmers have not made Kissan Credit Cards”, he added.
The former Minister said that crop insurance policy needs to be relooked to make it pro-Kissan policy and Revenue officials in Tehsil Mandal need to be pulled to save farmers from further harassment.
