BJP delegation from Ladakh calls on Smriti Irani; demands DD, FM services

NEW DELHI, Mar 30: A BJP Ladakh region delegation called on Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Textiles Minister, at New Delhi and discussed issues related to Kargil and Leh district.
The delegation was led by Thupstan Chewang, MP Ladakh, who urged upon the Union Minister to make arrangement of broadcasting the regional version of monthly programme Mann-Ki-Baat of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi from All India Radio relay stations in Nubra, Changthang, Drass, Tai-Suru and Padum along with other regional programmes generated from All India Radio Leh and Kargil districts.
Terming All India Radio (AIR) as the main media and communication lifeline of the both district that binds together its people who are otherwise spread across its difficult terrain, he said permission to relay these programmes through these relay stations will go a long way in strengthening the social bonds within the districts and demand of the people of Ladakh region. He also requested that these programmes should be broadcasted through FM Stations. “This will make these programmes even more accessible as cell phones are able to receive FM signal and are now present in almost every household of the district,” he added.
The MP also requested to complete the construction of AIR FM Station at Hombothingla and make FM Radio service available 24-hours-a-day at Leh and Kargil as it is in most of the country. A demand for power backup DG set was also made for Leh Radio station.
Highlighting the efforts of casual workers of All India Radio in Ladakh region, he also demanded that their services should be regularized.
Thupstan Chewang also discussed the issue of opening Programme Generating Facility of Doordarshan Kargil, which is one of the oldest demands of this border area which will provide a unique geo-strategic opportunity to reach the people living across the LoC in Baltistan.
Union Minister Smriti Zubin Irani assured MP Ladakh that all these demands will be fulfilled with immediate effects. She instructed the officials of the broadcasting to launch a local channel through Doordarshan in Kargil district and added that FM Radio station will also be initiated soon. She also promised to visit the region in summer.
The delegation comprised of Dorje Motup, Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC, Leh and others.
