Sir,
This refers to article, “Treatment of Biomedical waste” by Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat (DE Nov 13th). The article should be an eye opener to doctors especially those having degrees in hospital administration. On one hand, our specialist doctors and medical institutions keep discussing about un scientific waste management and its ill effects on human health, but on the other hand same medical practitioners/institutions are least bothered to manage the biomedical waste that gets generated in hospitals. The condition of Govt run hospitals in J&K especially SHMS hospital, LD Hospital under GMC Srinagar and hospitals working under Govt Medical College Jammu is very bad as for as treatment of biomedical waste is concerned. The condition of Government District and Sub District hospitals is also very pathetic as all the biomedical waste is mixed with normally generated waste. It is impressed upon Chief Secretary, Commissioner Secretary Health and Medical Education to take a serious note of this serious problem. Principals of GMC Jammu/Srinagar should be asked what they did with the funds which were provided to them in past for management of biomedical waste.
Yours etc…
Dr Fozia Kouser
