Sir,
I was thrilled to read news item (Survey report reveals rich biodiversity of Central University Jammu Campus) in this paper on 3rd Sept. I had seen from my childhood whatever has been said in the survey report so painstakingly discovered and documented by Dr C M Seth. It is an eye opener for the present generation to know as to what treasure of biodiversity is still existing inspite of the denudation and destruction of the Shivaliks over the years. It opens up new horizons for the youth, tourists, NGOs and indeed for the nature lovers. I can straightway imagine a Butterfuly Park on the pattern of Bangalore or what attracts people to Singapore. We have been trying to divert 10 to 20 percent of Vaishno Devi pilgrims to some other tourist destinations in Jammu region. This kind of biodversity with a butterfuly park at Suchani will attract many tourists and pilgrims if properly publicized and signposted at the National Highway at Raya Morh between Jammu and Samba. I understand Dr Seth has found two rare butterflies not seen elsewhere in the Country,’ Lime Butter Fly’ ‘Common Jay’ and ‘Blue Tiger’.
The credit for this goes to the Vice Chancellor Prof Ashok Aima who will I am sure ensure that study of biodversity of Shivaliks becomes part of the studies at the University. I would like to suggest that the University Campus should become a model for harvesting rain water so that not a single drop goes out of the Campus which can be done by roof water harvesting, ground water harvesting through gully plugging, check dams and finally the small water bodies at the exit of all the nallahas in the University Campus which will become an example for other Universities and institutions to emulate.
Yours etc…
