KATHUA, Sept 14: Police today recovered large quantity of torn notes in demonetized currency from Jammu-Pathankot National Highway at Dayala Chak in this district and seized them for investigations.
Reports said a big sack, full of torn currency in various denominations, which was demonetized last year by the Government of India, was recovered near a wooden furniture showroom at Dayala Chak. A large number of people gathered at the spot after observing the huge torn currency notes and informed police.
Police parties from Hiranagar reached the spot and took the notes in their custody.
Police was yet to ascertain as to who tore off the notes in such a large quantity and threw them on the National Highway in a sack. Various angles are being looked into as to whether it was handiwork of some businessmen.
SSP Kathua Mohammad Suleman Choudhary, when approached for comments, confirmed that police was investigating the matter after recovering the torn notes. Things would be clear shortly, he said, adding that police teams were on the job to ascertain the facts and reach to the accused.
“At this stage, we can’t say anything as to whether the torn currency notes belonged to some local businessmen or outsiders,’’ sources said.
