JAMMU, Nov 12: The Department of Legal Metrology today booked Big Bazar and Easy Day, Janipur for overcharging and sale of underweight products.
According to Manoj Prabhakar, Deputy Controller, Legal Metrology (Enforcement), one of the consumer purchased Bonn Bread marked with MRP Rs 50, and with a festive discount offer of Rs 10 offered by company at Easy Day, Janipur but the consumer was charged Rs 50 thus overcharged by Rs 10.
He said on the complaint of the consumer, a team of officers of Legal Metrology comprising Assistant Controller, Kewal Krishan and Inspectors, Pooja and Rohit, paid a surprise visit at Easy Day, Janipur and checked the prices of all items feeded in the software of the company. He said that on checking they found the complaint as genuine, as there were discrepancies on the declared prices and feeded prices, and therefore, a case of overcharging was registered against Easy Day.
The team also inspected Big Bazar market on the basis of consumer complaint and found number of discrepancies in goods prominently displayed for sale. All the bakery items of brand ‘Grand’ were less by 100 g against marked 400 g weight. The sale of all the underweight bakery items was stopped and products removed from the shelves. Besides, there were lots of other discrepancies like smudging of MRP, use of stickers for declaring mandatory declarations, etc, which is an offence under the relevant law enforced for the purpose.
A total of 9 companies were booked at Big Bazar Mart and cases registered for legal proceedings with the direction not to sell such deceptive packages so that consumers’ interest is protected.
