Shouting slogans, the protesters briefly blocked the road in front of JU main gate and also tried to take out a protest march. However, Police did not allow them to proceed further even as there was no use of force.
Seeking CBI probe into the death of Prof Chander Shekhar Chandra, the protesting people alleged that Jammu University administration might influence ongoing investigation by the J&K Police to shield the officers who were responsible for abetment to suicide by the deceased.
It may be recalled that Prof Chander Shekhar Chandra of Psychology Department in Jammu University had committed suicide by hanging himself soon after his suspension on the charges of sexual harassment. On the basis of written statements by some girl students, JU Committee Against Sexual Harassment (CASH) had found Prof Chander Shekhar guilty and recommended necessary action against him.
Alleging that the deceased was a victim of castism, the protesting people also sought action against JU Registrar, HoD of Psychology Department and Chairperson of the CASH. They demanded that the trio should be placed under suspension till final outcome of investigations into the case.
The protest was also joined by some JU employees, faculty members and students. Pertinent to mention that Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA) has also suspended work for two days on September 12-13 for fair probe into death of Prof Chander Shekhar. The J&K Police has already constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the case.
