Bhalla distributes Rs 25 lakh cheques among BSUP beneficiaries

JAMMU, June 29: Minister for Housing, Horticulture, Culture, Youth Services and Sports Raman Bhalla today distributed 25 cheques worth Rs 25 lakh among 25 urban poor families of Channi Himmat, Nai Basti, Bahu Fort, Nanak Nagar and Gorkha Nagar under Basic Services to the Urban Poor Scheme (BSUP).
The financial assistance was given as first installment amounting to Rs. 1 lakh to the state subject urban poor families for construction of pacca houses.
Joint Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Kapil Sharma, besides other senior officers of JMC were present on the occasion.
After distributing the BSUP cheques among Urban Poor at Gandhi Nagar, Mr. Bhalla addressed the gathering and said that the Government was paying focused attention to uplift underprivileged and deprived sections of the society. He said for the purpose special schemes with liberal financial support from Government have been launched to rehabilitate and improve living standards of this poor section of the society.
The Minister said that aim of the Government was to upgrade the living standard of poor section  of the society by providing all basic facilities.
Mr. Bhalla urged upon the left out urban poor families to complete   all   required documents to get benefit under centrally sponsored welfare schemes like Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP), Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) and Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY).
The Minister asked the concerned officers to release the next installment of the BSUP scheme to the beneficiaries at the earliest after physical verification of their constructions under Ist instalment of Rs 1 lakh.
Giving details of other projects taken up under BSUP scheme, Mr. Bhalla said that under prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) special attention is being paid to rehabilitate urban poor, adding that under the scheme various projects have been undertaken in urban centers of the State.
The Minister said in Jammu, one project at Sunjwan worth Rs 21 crore is underway, for shifting Urban Poor of Rajiv Nagar and other poor basties of Gandhi Nagar constituency. He said the projects once completed would have 326 dwelling units, adding that 21 blocks having 64 dwelling units have already been completed and work on remaining is in full swing.
Mr. Bhalla also highlighted the features of Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY)  saying that it envisages a “Slum Free India” with inclusive and equitable cities in which every citizen has access to basic civic infrastructure, social amenities and decent shelter. He said the scheme will provide shelter to weaker section of the society.
Earlier, the Minister also visited Rampura and kick started construction work of lanes and drains, for which Government has earmarked Rs. 4.50 lakh. He asked the JMC to complete the launched project within stipulated time frame.
