Banking operation affected as employees go on strike

JAMMU, Dec 20: Banking operation in the Public Sector Banks across the State was hit today as its employees went on one-day strike, protesting banking reforms.
The branches of SBI, however,  functioned normally as its employees stayed away from the strike.
Normal function, however, was affected at semi-urban and rural branches across the State.  Cash withdrawal and deposit, clearing of cheques and electronic cash transfer were hit to some extent.
The State units of All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), All India Bank Officers’ Association (AIBOA) and National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE),  participated in the strike.
This strike was in opposition to amendments carried out in Banking Regulation Act and Banking Companies Act, enabling foreign equity in public sector banks, an AIBEA spokesman said.
The amendment in the banking laws will dilute the interest of public sector bank, he said.
Meanwhile, Insurance employees of the State under the banner of North Zone Insurance Employees  Association (NZIEA) affiliated with All India  Insurance Employees Association  (AIIEA) held massive protest demonstration during lunch hour in support of  one day strike of the banking employees here. Divisional secretary Pawan Gupta addressed the gathering the criticised the Government for its policies.
