Banihal – Qazigund tunnel open to traffic

Fulfilling the vision of the Prime Minister in respect of building quality infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, 8.5 Kilometer long tunnel between Qazigund and Banihal is all complete and has been opened to traffic for trial and in this connection, the Prime Minister is likely to inaugurate, the tunnel shortly virtually from New Delhi most probably after August 15 where Union Minister for Transport and National Highways Nitin Gadkari , Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh etc would be present. The completion of this tunnel and throwing open to normal traffic not only would reduce the travel time between the two ends but make the travel of nearly 9 kilometres enjoyable, smooth and sans interference of weather related problems which keeps on affecting the traffic movement due to landslides and shooting stones. Saving nearly 16 kilometres of travel and over one and a half hour in travel time would further reduce the overall time of travel between the twin capital cities of Jammu and Kashmir. This tunnel was going to replace and give rest to Jawahar Tunnel which has grown in age after being in vital “service” for decades. All weather connectivity through the new tunnel is the most important and advantageous characteristics of this engineering feat at a height of 5800 feet above sea level.
