Bangladesh must discourage illegal migration: Swamy

GUWAHATI, Nov 22:

Senior BJP leader and MP Dr Subramanian Swamy today said the Narendra Modi-led government is expected to persuade Bangladesh to ‘discourage illegal migration’ to India, just as his government has been able to stop firing from across Pakistan border and get fishermen released from Sri Lanka. Talking to reporters here, Dr Swamy said illegal migration from
Bangladesh to Assam and other parts of India could be stopped only when Bangladesh was made to ‘feel the heat’ so that it stopped encouraging migration of its people to India. He said deportation of illegal Bangladeshi migration was not taking place anywhere in India because it was a very difficult task and not possible without cooperation from Bangladesh. ‘There would be diktats of UNHR and intervention from the Security Council. So we must have consensus to make deportation of illegal migration from Bangladesh possible and for any agreement on infiltration must seek cooperation from Bangladesh,’ he said.
Maintaining that even sealing of the Indo-Bangladesh border will not help stop infiltration, Dr Swamy added, ‘The only way left is to make Bangladesh stop encouraging migration of people from their country. Retaliatory actions have to be taken to make Bangladesh fall in line in respect of discouraging illegal migration from that country. I expect Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise the infiltration issue with his Bangladesh counterpart on the sidelines of the forthcoming SAARC summit.’ He pointed out that the present government in India could succeed in making blazing Pakistan guns go silent across the border and persuading Sri Lankan government to release Indian fishermen from death row and hoped that this Government would be able to make Bangladesh government discourage illegal migration to India.
