Bandipora-Gurez road thrown open for vehicular traffic

Srinagar, Apr 17: Bandipora-Gurez road was today reopened for the movement of the traffic after the snow clearance on the highway was completed by the Border Roads Organization (BRO).
The Gurez Valley with a population of over 40000 people has remained cut off due to the heavy snow precipitation at the Razdan pass which is at an altitude of 11672 fts in December last year .
A BRO official said that the summer snow clearance on the Bandipora -Gurez road between Tragbal and Kanzelwan started on March 2 amid extreme challenging conditions.
“The intermittent snowfall and the bone-chilling winds at the Razdan pass made things even worse for the snow clearance team of the project Beacon. The snow accumulation in this sector records 35 feet at places and has an average height of 15 feet’s,” the official said.
He said that even though the nation-wide lockdown is on owing to COVID-19, the Border Road personnel’s continued its mission to connect the Gurez Valley with the hinterland at the earliest.
The road, considered as the lifeline to Gurez Valley will provide much-needed relief to the locals and the security personnel by allowing the essentials commodities and services to the region which has remained cut-off.
