Sir,
In last couple of weeks authorities in J&K blocked mobile internet services more than once. Prior to that in recent months inernet was blocked in the states of Haryana and Gujarat to maintain law and order . Importance of internet can be gauged from the fact that most of the Government services are online these days and public agencies are officially present on various social media platforms. Mobile internet has bridged the urban rural information gap to a greater extent as print media has negligible penetration in rural and hilly pockets. Though the intention of the authorities in blocking mobile internet is to prevent any law and order problem in the common good but it is also a fact that ban on mobile inernet causes a lot of inconvenience to everyone particularly students and rural folks.
To make sure that Govt isn’t forced to block mobile internet, users must avoid use of mobile internet to spread rumours or provocative information. Govt should direct all the media houses and celebrities not to share inciting material on social media platforms . In addition law enforcement agencies should identify and counsel those individuals/groups of individuals who are found habitual of “delibrately sharing sensitive information” on social media . Mobile internet can’t be singled out as the only cause of “unrest and violence”. Organisations giving calls for protests should also be made accountable in case any untoward incident happens.
Moreover, if our cyber laws aren’t acting as deterrent suitable amendments should be considered. In nut shell govt will not ban mobile internet should protests (if any) remain non-violent. On our part we shouldn’t pay heed to provocative contents shared via internet . Let’s always remember that how we use technolgy is in our hands . A nuclear power plant can electrify our houses whereas a nuclear bomb results in “Hiroshima and Nagasaki”, albeit both are based on radioactivity.
Yours etc…..
