Sir,
The recent order by the Jammu & Kashmir Government restricting the number of guests in a marriage ceremony is unwelcome due to many reasons. First it comes without any prior notice and that too without much media coverage, which has shown the order in poor light. Also, the Government’s aim behind the move is unclear as what outcomes it expects.
Further, wastage of food happens not only in marriages but also by the food storages; loud speakers are played not only during marriage ceremonies but by religious places also and lavish expenses are nothing compared to massive scams like the Roshni scam of our own state committed by members of our own State machinery. The only part of the ban which made little sense was limiting the number of dishes to be served in a marriage function. But then again, an entire industry survives on marriage parties. Food stalls in addition to florists, decorators and banquet halls would certainly be hit to some extent, at least!
The order might be welcomed by lower middle class and poor families who would be relieved of high expenses meted out to them by traditions and societal customs but, the ones who spend lavishly and waste lakhs and crores of rupees on marriages can easily conduct destination weddings. Such weddings would only incur financial loss to the State and its own people.
Yours etc….
