PRETORIA (SOUTH AFRICA), Aug 28: Balwant Thakur, the Cultural Diplomat of India, Director Swami Vivekanand Cultural Center Johannesburg, met the High Commissioner of India to South Africa Jaideep Sarkar at the Embassy of India in Pretoria.
Balwant Thakur apprised the High Commissioner of India about his diplomatic vision and the cultural initiatives he is going to take in bringing two nations together. He informed that Ministry of Culture Government of India is organizing Festival of India in South Africa from 22nd to 28th of September, 2019 for which his office will be the nodal organization to devise, design and showcase this mega cultural event spread over the cities of Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria. In addition to this, a historic event is being planned to be organized at the Constitution Hill, Johannesburg to mark the 150 years of celebrating the Mahatma Gandhi. The Constitution Hill is a living museum that tells the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy. It was where Mahatma Gandhi was jailed.
Ever since the day Balwant Thakur took over the new responsibility of projecting and promoting the cultural legacy of India in South Africa, he has been very active in exploring new innovative ways of establishing the cultural supremacy of India in this part of the world. Popularly known as the magic man of theatre, Balwant Thakur has many firsts to his credit which earned him the highest Indian honours including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Tagore Award, Abhinayak Samman, Sapatrishi Samman, Shikhar Samman in addition to Padamshree.
