Srinagar, Mar 14: A century-old shrine of Baba Fareed (R.A) was gutted in a fire after lightning struck it at Garkote area of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district last night.
The shrine was constructed in memory of  13th Century Sufi mystic Baba Fareed (RA) who is buried in Lahore Pakistan. It is believed that the Sufi saint spent several years  in the forests of Garkote and the shrine was constructed in his memory.
In 2003, the shrine was renovated by the locals under Baba Fareed Welfare Committee headed by then Chairman, Maqsood Ahmad.
Meanwhile, Governor N N Vohra has expressed deep concern about the extensive damage to the Holy Shrine of Baba Fareed. He has advised the State Government and all other concerned authorities to see that no time is lost in restoring the shrine to its pristine glory.
Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has also expressed concern over the reports of damage caused to the Holy Shrine of Hazrat Baba Fareed.
She has directed the Baramulla Deputy Commissioner and other concerned officers to visit the shrine complex and take necessary measures for restoration of the same.
