Awareness, screening camps organized across J&K on World Diabetes Day

JAMMU, Nov 14: World Diabetes Day was celebrated with great zest across Jammu and Kashmir with the aim to increase awareness and screen people for diabetes in line with this year’s theme “Access to Diabetes Education”.
All levels of health facilities from medical colleges to health and wellness centres organized education camps in which people were invited and provided information which can be used to prevent diabetes and also ensure early diagnosis. It was supplemented by providing free diagnostic services in which blood sugar was estimated in addition to hypertension screening. More than 52,000 were educated on diabetes prevention, risk factors and benefits of controlling blood sugar. In addition, 42,000 were screened for diabetes from which 1900 new diabetics were identified which were counselled regarding further steps to be undertaken.
Department of Endocrinology, SKIMS celebrated the Day today at SKIMS auditorium. During the event, panel discussion on “The Emerging Epidemic of Obesity, Diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome” was conducted which was moderated by Dr Bashir A Laway HoD Endocrinology & Dean Medical Faculty SKIMS. A workshop was also conducted in which experts deliberated on various significant topics on diabetes. Emphasis was laid on insulin management, carbohydrate counting and self monitoring of blood glucose.
IIM Jammu holds an interactive awareness session on the prevention and treatment of diabetes to commemorate the World Diabetes Day. The session was conducted by Dr Taranpreet Kaur (Assistant Professor, General Medicine, AIIMS Jammu) while Prof Jabir Ali (Dean Academics) presided over the session. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Jabir Ali urged everyone present on the occasion to practice a healthy lifestyle which will lead to better productivity and optimum output. Dr Taranpreet Kaur sensitized the faculty, staff, and students on the various ways to prevent Diabetes.
World Diabetes Day was celebrated at Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) Jammu, where an awareness programme was organized on Diabetes. Principal GMC Jammu Dr Shashu Sudan Sharma was chief guest on the occasion during which speakers threw light on ways to control diabetes and gave meaningful tips for healthy practices for leading a healthy life.
To mark the occasion, a free diabetes detection camp was conducted at Jammu Diabetes care Centre, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. During the camp, many people were screened and among them few new patients were detected. Eminent diabetologist Dr Raj Kumar Sharma gave practical tips and mentioned guidelines to control the blood sugar to achieve targeted HbA1c levels to avoid long term macro and micro vascular complications in the form of Neuropathy, Nephropathy, Retinopathy and avoid Cardiovascular events which increase morbidity and mortality among diabetics.
In Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar, a seminar on diabetes was organized by Department of Medicine. Earlier, a global diabetic walk was flagged off by Medical Superintendent of the Hospital Dr Parveen Yograj from the Hospital. Students of various paramedical institutions participated in the walk which after passing through various localities culminated at main entrance of the Hospital. Two diabetes screening camps were also organized at Green Belt Park and Gole Market (Gandhi Nagar) by the Hospital in association with respective Corporators of the area, Rahul Kumar and Bhanu Mahajan.
World Diabetes Day was celebrated at Associated Hospital GMC Rajouri in collaboration with Department of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry, Non Communicable Disease (NCD) Clinic, Nursing College BGBSU Rajouri and SVS Paramedical College Sunderbani. Principal GMC Rajouri Prof (Dr) AS Bhatia and HoD Medicine Dr Jamil ul Hassan briefed the participants about causes of diabetes and the tips to control the disease.
An awareness camp and free blood sugar screening camp was organized at Maternity Hospital Gandhi Nagar (Jammu) to commemorate World Diabetes Day. Dr Arun Sharma, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital along with all staff members was present to initiate the camp. He informed that all pregnant women as well as general public coming to the Hospital are being screened for blood sugar and Medical Officers & nursing staff is providing awareness and knowledge about diabetes to them.
