JAMMU, Dec 2: Awareness programmes, lectures and rallies were organized to mark World AIDS Day.
Minister of State for Health Shabir Ahmad Khan has said AIDS is one of the most challenging public health problems in the world and which has social, economic and development dimensions. He called for launching a strong movement against HIV/AIDS with the active involvement of various stakeholders of the society.
Health Minister said this while addressing a function organized to observe World AIDS Day by J&K State AIDS Prevention and Control Society (JKSAPC) in collaboration with Lawrence Public School.
Shabir said this disease is consuming the lives of many people, irrespective of sex, age and class worldwide. He said collective effort is required to create awareness about the disease and how to prevent it.
Director AIDS Control Society Dr Madhu Kullar said that the main objective of observing this day is to inculcate among the general masses the gravity of the problem.
A skit on HIV/AIDS awareness was presented by school children with another attraction signature campaign by Times of India, besides exhibition of posters by student.
Director Health Services Dr BS Pathania, Director Family Welfare Dr Baldev Raj, Controller Drug and Food Organization Satish Gupta, President Gandhi Global Family J&K Chapter S P Verma, Ex Director Health Services, Dr Jasbir Singh besides many others threw light on several preventive measures against AIDS.
World AIDS Day was observed at District Hospital Samba. An awareness rally was organised jointly by ICTC staff of District Hospital Samba in collaboration with students of Government Girls Middle School, Budhwani, Government Boys Middle School, Budhwani and Bhargava Paramedical Institute. The rally passed through old bazaar, main chowk and Fort Road. Earlier the rally was flagged off by Chief Medical Officer Samba Dr Kartar Chand in the presence of Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Dr AS Slathia, Block Medical Officer, Dr Vikas Bhardwaj, Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Bharat Bhushan, DTO, Dr Vinay Chib.
To observe World AIDS Day, a day long awareness programme was organized at Government Degree College, Thannamandi by the NSS Unit of the college. During the programme a lecture on “AIDS: Prevention and Awareness” was presented by Prof Rubina Kouser of Zoology Department. At the end an interactive session was held in which Block Medical Officer Darhal Dr Mehmood A Bajar and his accompanying officials clarified the queries regarding the spread of AIDS. Dr Shakeel Ahmed Raina, Vice Principal of the College highlighted the significance of moral and religious education in prevention of the dreadful disease like AIDS. Programme was coordinated by Prof M Junaid Jazib, HoD Environmental Studies. Prof Saleem Ayaz Rather, Programme Officer NSS, presented vote of thanks. Prof A R Qadri, HoD Urdu, faculty members and large number of students were present.
NSS and Red Cross Units of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar in co-ordination with Regional Red Cross Society and Government Medical College organized a Voluntary Blood Donation Camp. Principal of the College Dr Kiran Bakshi along with Secretary, Regional Red Cross Society Anil K Padha, faculty members and students were present. More than 30 students and staff members donated the blood.
On the eve of World AIDS Day, three day workshop was organized by Government Degree College (GDC), Akhnoor. Awareness rally, symposium, poster making and slogan writing competitions were organized during the workshop. Prof PK Sharma, Principal GDC Khour, Shub Lata and Dr Asha Gupta Abrol, Principal, GDC Akhnoor threw light on the medical aspects of the disease. Shalini Sharma, Poonam Angral and Sonia Sharma emerged winners in symposium, whereas Neelam Kumari, Sheetal Sharma and Shivani Bhau in slogan writing competition and Poonam Sharma, Arpan Jyoti and Ajay Kumar in poster making competition. Later winners were given prizes. The whole event was organized under the supervision of Prof Anjeela Qureshi, Programme Officer, NSS Unit, GDC Akhnoor.
MC Khalsa College of Education organized cleanliness drive, painting, slogan writing and poster making competitions to observe World AIDS Day, in which 150 volunteers participated. Volunteers also expressed their views on various topics related to AIDS. An exhibition was also organised, wherein charts supplemented with pictures and information, slogans and pamphlets were put on display. Dr Madhu Singh, Principal of the college made an informative presentation on issues related to AIDS. NSS programme Officer Anju Kapoor conducted the proceeding of the programme.
NSS unit of Trikuta Degree College, Nardani conducted awareness rally on the eve of World AIDS Day wherein students and the staff participated. The rally was flagged off by the Chairman Dr Roop Lal Sharma, which after passing through the main road of Kot Bhalwal and Bantalab chowk culminated in the college premises. Earlier, the students were addressed by the Principal Trikuta Degree College Prof PK Koul who urged upon them to leave no stone unturned in spreading the awareness among the masses regarding HIV/AIDS. A programme was also held by Physiotherapy College Jammu students wherein a skit was presented depicting the misunderstanding of people about the HIV/ AIDS.
Science Club of Handa College of Education organized a poster making competition on World AIDS Day. Principal of the College highlighted the causes of AIDS. The theme for the poster making competition was “Shared responsibility: Results for an AIDS free generation”. Sidra Farooq bagged first position, second position was won by Charu Sharma and third position by Mehreen Mushtaq. Gurpreet Handa, Director Handa College distributed certificates among the winners.
RM College of Education organized one day Intra College Competition on the theme, “Know AIDS to Control AIDS”, in which students participated. Trustee of the College Rita Mengi inaugurated the programme. Principal of the college PK Dhar presented the welcome address. Essay writing and slogan writing competitions were also held. Senior faculty members RS Moza and Priyanka Sharma adjudged the competition. The winners of the competition were given away certificates and prizes by the Trustee. Rajneesh Kour presented vote of thanks.
The NSS Unit of KCS College of Education (Women) observed World AIDS Day. NSS Programme Officer Ruchika Chib threw light on the cause and precautions of the dreadful diseases “AIDS”. NSS volunteers also expressed their views. Purnima Chaudhri, Chairperson of the College was the chief guest. Sneh Khanna, member of NSS Committee presented vote of thanks.
A painting competition was organized by Chenab College of Education to observe World AIDS day. A rally was organized, in which NSS volunteers participated. The rally was flagged off by Principal of the College Kamaldeep Kaur in presence of staff members. A symposium was also organized, followed by educative skit by NSS volunteers.
To observe World AIDS Day, J&K Society for Promotion of Youth and Masses (JKSPYM) organized a drawing competition in which DBN School students and children affected/infected with dreaded disease participated. In the competition, Mayuri, Akruti and Kalpana emerged winners. A community event was also organized for people living with HIV and members from HIGH Risk Group. Rakesh Kumar, Secretary, JKSPYM, Ravi Razdan from Green Alternative, Balwant Kumar, Ex-Corporator and Vikram Singh, Incharge Police Post Talab Tillo expressed their views on this dreadful disease.
Speak India Environmental Foundation (SIEF) organized an awareness programme on the eve of World AIDS day in the premises of Baba Balo Dev ji College of Paramedical Sciences, Kathua, in which Ngos head, social activist and students of institutes participate. Executive member of the organization Naresh Kumar, Deepa Sharma, Coordinator, SIEF and students namely Sonia, Jyoti, Madhu, Barsha, Rishu, Jai Mala and Nisha expressed their views.
To observe World AIDS Day, Bhartiya Lok Sangeet Kala Sansthan in coordination with State AIDS Control Prevention Society at RS Pura, in which women including aganwadi/ASHA workers participated. The artists of BLSKS tailored and designed their cultural items to focus the attention on various aspects of AIDS and its prevention with special emphasis to control the spread HIV infection. The scripts, songs and short plays staged with full use of folk media were special attractions of the cultural meet. SDM Shamsher Singh Sambyal who was the chief guest underlined the importance of organising such folk-live programme. Dr Des Raj Dogra, BMO RS Pura delivered key note address on the subject. Earlier ML Dogra, Chairman BLSKS, VK Magotra, MD, BLSKS and Project Officer ICDS RS Pura Chander Kanta also expressed their views.
