The recent media reports that the Union Government is going to confer the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna on veteran BJP leader and former Prime Minister,Atal Behari Vajpayee and Netaji Subhash Chander Bose,Freedom fighter and founder of Azad Hind Fauz,has generated a lot of unseemly controversy with many parties demanding this coveted award for their leaders.BSP Supremo Ms Mayawati has demanded Bharat Ratna for Kanshi Ram and Shiv Sena has demanded that Vir Savarkar be conferred this Award.Samajwadi Party has also demanded that well known Socialist leader of yesteryears,Ram Manohar Lohia be conferred this Award.Demands have also been raised from various quarters that Indian Hockey wizard who scored more than 1000 goals and dominated this game at national and international level for twenty years ,of course,during the British rule in India deserved this prestigious Award long ago,should now be conferred this honour posthumously without any delay.The grand nephew of Netaji Subhash Chander Bose has said that Netaji Subhash Chander Bose’s stature is much above this Award and this award should not be conferred on him.
Bharat Ratna or the Jewel of India is the most coveted civilian award conferred by the President of India on the recommendation of the Prime Minister of India on a citizen who has made exceptional contribution to the country and it should be conferred solely on the basis of merit and singular contribution of an Indian in public service or other fields.It should be kept above petty politics.A panel of eminent persons should be constituted to recommend and then shortlist the most deserving person for this highest civilian award.Party politics should not be allowed to trivialise this great award.In this age of internet and IT Revolution,possibilities may be explored to put the whole country to popular vote (online) to shortlist the most deserving people for this coveted award leaving little scope for any controversy.
