Awaiting MHA draft on proposed safeguards, democratic structure: KDA

Kargil, June 8: Leaders of the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), including Co-Chairman Asgar Ali Karbalai, Sajjad Kargili, and Member of Parliament from Ladakh Haji Hanifa Jan, addressed a press conference regarding the ongoing dialogue with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on constitutional safeguards and the democratic framework for Ladakh.
Speaking on the occasion, Co-Chairman Asgar Ali Karbalai stated that the KDA is awaiting the draft proposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs following the discussions held on May 22. He said that the alliance wants to carefully examine the contents of the MHA draft before taking the next course of action.

Sajjad Kargili said that negotiations with the Government of India are continuing and that the KDA and Leh Apex Body have already submitted their draft proposals concerning Statehood and inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. He added that the stakeholders are now waiting for the MHA’s draft response.
Reiterating the alliance’s position, Kargili asserted that the KDA will not compromise on its core demands of Statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards for Ladakh. He emphasized that these demands are essential for protecting the region’s identity, land, employment rights, and democratic aspirations.
The leaders expressed hope that the Government would respond positively to the aspirations of the people of Ladakh and take meaningful steps towards addressing their long-pending demands.
