Avoid Evaluation Errors

Sir,
This has reference to the news item’Evaluation errors:CBSE orders action against 130 teachers’ (DE, June 29, 2018).It is surprising to read that CBSE has held some teachers responsible for evaluation errors/major mistakes in totalling of marks in the class 10 and 12 Board exam papers and the gross carelessness committed by them resulting in severe hardships for the candidates and tarnishing the Board’s reputation and initiated action against them.Examinations are an important tools to judge the knowledge of candidates after the end of a particular period of time and the Board exams of class 10 and 12 have a great significance for the students. Students work hard and burn midnight’s oil to prepare for these examinations in order to get good marks. But when their answer scripts are evaluated in a careless and negligent manner and they get less marks than they deserve, it is but natural that they should feel shocked and dejected and their faith in the evaluation system is shattered. Some of them may even take to extreme step due to the carelessness of the evaluators. There is no doubt that evaluation system should be objective, reliable, foolproof and candidate friendly. The system should be such as ensures that no candidate gets less than what he/she deserves. If candidates are not satisfied with the marks they are awarded, there should be hassle free process for applying for reevaluation of their answer scripts.A nominal fee must be prescribed so that even the students belonging to poor families can apply for reevaluation. The teachers engaged in the evaluation process should also be trained and oriented properly in the process of evaluation so that the candidates donot suffer for no fault of theirs.
The fact that as a result of reevaluation, some students got 55-55 marks more than what they had been awarded when the results were declared, shows the degree of negligence on the part of the erring teachers. There may be a difference of 5-6 marks when an answer sheet is evaluated by two examiners as the element of subjectivity is always there in long answer type questions but the huge difference of 50 to 55 proves the callous attitude and gross negligence of the teachers concerened.CBSE has done the right thing by initiating action against the negligent teachers. It will prove to be a deterrent for the negligent teachers and the candidates will be awarded as per their performance in the examination. The other Boards, including the J&K Board of School Education also ought to introduce reforms in the system of evaluation to make this process more transparent, student friendly and foolproof.
