Avalanche warning issued; widespread rain in Kashmir, snowfall in Gulmarg

SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, Apr 28: Many parts of Jammu and Kashmir were lashed by widespread rains since yesterday while there was light overnight snowfall in Ski resort of Gulmarg much to the delight of the tourists while traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was disrupted for about four hours due to landslide in Ramban sector.

There were incessant rains across Jammu and Kashmir for the last two days leading to water-logging in certain areas of Srinagar and other places.
The hills including Gulmarg received fresh snowfall today leading to the drop in the temperatures in the region.
Gulmarg received around 4 inches of snowfall much to the delight of the tourists. The tourists who visited Gulmarg today were overjoyed with the snowfall. They were seen playing with the snow.
The Meteorological department today forecast “improvement” in weather but said that there was more rains in store till May 4 in Kashmir.
“Improvement in weather is expected from afternoon onwards,” a Meteorological Department official said.
From April 29- May 2nd, he said, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy. “Possibility of intermittent rain/thunderstorm at scattered places is expected towards late afternoon/evening (50% chance).”
From May 3-4, he said, there is possibility of widespread light to moderate rain and thunder expected in J&K. “Some places are likely to receive heavy rains,” he said.  Overall, “weather is very likely to remain erratic till May 4,” he added.
Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) today issued an avalanche alert over higher reaches in three  districts for next 24 hours.
The DMA, said that a ‘low’ danger level avalanche is likely to occur at 2800 to 3000 metres above sea level over Ganderbal, Baramulla and Kupwara districts.
People living in these areas have been in the meantime advised to take precautions and avoid venturing in the avalanche prone areas till further orders.
The traffic on Jammu-Srinagar Highway was stalled after landslide near Sherbibi in Banihal area at around 4.30 pm today. The NH authorities pressed three machines into service to clear the road. The highway could be restored at around 8.30 pm. Due to rain in the sector the road was slippery at several places, but traffic later moved smoothly.
The rain has also been reported in Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi and Doda areas today. A slight fall in temperature has been witnessed in the region.
Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a low of 6.5°C against 7.0°C the previous night and it was 2.8°C below normal for the city.
Qazigund recorded a low of 6.8°C against 6.6°C the previous night and it was 1.0°C below normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of 4.2°C against 3.5°C the previous night and it was 0.2°C below normal for the tourist resort.
Kokernag recorded a low of 5.7°C against 5.2°C the previous night and it was 2.4°C below normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 1.0°C against minus 0.5°C the previous night and it was 5.2°C below normal for the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 5.6°C against 3.4°C the previous night and it was 2.2°C below normal for the town.
Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 2.2°C and 4.6°C respectively.
