Avalanche warning in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: A ‘medium danger’ avalanche warning has been issued for areas above 300 meters in all districts of the Kashmir valley.

An official spokesman said here this evening that Divisional administration Kashmir has informed that in view of the weather predictions made by Indian Metrological Department and Communication received from Director, Ministry of Defence, Snow and Avalanche Study Extt, Chandigarh, a medium danger avalanche warning exists for avalanche prone areas above 300 mtrs in all districts of the valley.

In this connection people are advised not to venture in steep avalanche prone areas during next 48 hours. The inclement weather may also trigger landslide and blockage of roads in vulnerable areas.

Accordingly all the Deputy Commissioners have been asked to monitor the situation and take immediate necessary precautionary measures in such areas to avoid any loss of life or property.

Meanwhile, Udhampur District administration has issued weather advisory for general public of the district that the weather is likely to deteriorate on March 12 and 13.

”Administration has advised the people not to venture in landslide prone areas and not to go near rivers and nallahs during this period to avoid any untoward incident,” official spokesman here said.        He said that people are also advised not to panic, take all necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary travelling during this period.

”All the concerned departments related to disaster management have been asked to remain alert during the period and to activate their men and machinery and to ensure that there is no disruption of essential services, power supply, water supply, health care services,” he added. (AGENCIES)
