Forecast of snow, rains in Kashmir for 3 days

SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, Jan 22: A low intensity avalanche hit a village in Tulail area of Gurez in Bandipora district today without causing any damage to life or property while traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was disrupted for about two hours due to landslide in Dewal area of Udhampur.
Official sources said that the avalanche hit Husangam village of Gurez valley in Bandipora district this afternoon. However, there was no report of any damage to life or property.
The slide impacted the upper reaches of Husngam village of Gurez. An advisory has been issued to the residents of Gurez Valley not to venture out unnecessarily.
Teams from the district administration rushed to the spot to assess the situation who confirmed that no damage or loss of life was caused due to the avalanche, they added.
Residents living in the high altitudes have been advised to take precautions and avoid venturing out in avalanche prone areas.
Kashmir valley is experiencing erratic weather with light to moderate snowfall at higher reaches for the past few days.
Meanwhile, SDMA has issued a fresh avalanche warning in seven districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.
A statement said an avalanche with Medium Danger Level is likely to occur above 2500/2600 meters over Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban in Jammu division and Bandipora and Kupwara districts of north Kashmir in next 24 hours.
Avalanche with Low Danger Level is likely to occur above 2600 meter over Baramulla in North Kashmir and Ganderbal in Central Kashmir district in next 24 hours.
It has also advised the people living in these areas to take precautions and avoid venturing in the avalanche prone areas.
Meanwhile, Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked at around 12.30 pm after land slide near Dewal bridge in Samroli area of Udhampur district today. Some portion of road also sank at this stretch and it took about two hours to the Highway authorities to restore traffic on the road.
With the blockade on this busy highway, a large number of vehicles remained stranded for about two hours. A long traffic jam was created after the highway was restored. It took long time to the Traffic police authorities to streamline the traffic movement on the road.
With cloudy day in Jammu region today, there has been some improvement in day temperature. The day temperature in Jammu was 19.0 degree Celsius while night temperature also rose up to 7.1 deg C.
Holy township of Katra Mata Vaishnodevi recorded a minimum temperature of 7.6 degree C and maximum 15.7 deg C today.
Bhaderwah township in Jammu region recorded a night temperature of 1.4 degree C, Batote town 0.7 deg C while Banihal township at the foothills of Pir Panjal a minimum temperature of 1.0 degree Celsius temp today.
Meanwhile, weatherman today forecast snow and rain in Kashmir during three days even as mercury increased at most places.
A Meteorological Department official said that while light to moderate snow and rain was expected during the next 24 hours, moderate snow and moderate to heavy snow over middle and higher reaches(60% chance) was expected in J&K from January 24-25.
On January 26, he said, light rain in Jammu region and light snow in Kashmir (60% chance) was expected.
“Overall, weather is very likely to remain erratic with cloudy, intermittent rain and snow till January 29,” he added.
He said that parts of the Valley also received snowfall with Srinagar receiving 0.6mm (rain), Qazigund 5cm, Pahalgam 7.3cm, Kokernag 1.5cm and Gulmarg 4.0cm.
Srinagar recorded a low of 1.0°C against last night’s 0.2°C. Today’s minimum temperature, was 3.3°C above normal for the city.
Qazigund recorded a low of 0.2°C against minus 0.4°C on the previous night and it was 4.1°C above normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 6.3°C against minus 0.4°C the previous night and it was 4.1°C above normal for the tourist resort.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 1.9°C against minus 3.9°C the previous night and it was 1.5°C above normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 6.8°C against minus 8.4°C the previous night and it was 1.4°C above normal for the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at minus 0.5°C against minus 2.8°C the previous night and it was 2.4°C above normal in the town.
Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 15.0°C and minus 13.7°C respectively.
