Srinagar, Oct 10: Authorities today imposed strict curfew-like restrictions in civil line areas of city to prevent Shia mourners from taking out Muharram procession from commercial hub Lal Chowk.
The Shia community traditionally used to take out a large Muharram procession from Abi Guzar neighbourhood of Lal Chowk to Hyderia Hall Dalgate but since over last two decades the Government has disallowed this procession fearing law and order problem.
The authorities imposed strict curfew-like restrictions in the areas falling under Maisuma, Ram Munshi Bagh, Kralkhud, Shaheed Gunj, Karan Nagar and Batamaloo police stations while all roads leading to Lal Chowk were sealed. Hundreds of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed in all these areas as well as in Lal Chowk area.
Amid strict curbs, a group of Shia mourners tried to take out a march from Batamaloo area but contingents of police and paramilitary intercepted them and used canes to disperse the mourners. Several mourners were also detained by police.
