NEW DELHI, Nov 6 : A delegation of Australian Members of Parliament (MPs) called on Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh here and discussed a wide range of issues of bilateral interest, particularly in the area of Nuclear Power and Atomic Energy.
The delegation was led by Ted O’Brien, Member of Parliament representing Fairfax (Queensland) and Senior leader of Liberal National Party. He was accompanied by Josh Wilson MP, Zali Steggall MP, Dr David Gillespie MP and others.
Following an initial round of introduction and opening remarks by the members of Australian delegation, Dr Jitendra Singh recalled that during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Australia in Nov 2014, a decision was taken to establish “Framework for Security Cooperation”. Following the Prime Minister Modi’s visit, the relations between the two countries have been on the upswing.
Dr Jitendra said, India’s nuclear programme is devoted to peaceful purposes and under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, over the last five years, a number of steps have been taken to facilitate the application of Atomic energy in different sectors, in order to bring ease of living. These sectors, he said, include medical and healthcare, agriculture and above all utilization of nuclear energy as a cost-effective and clean source of energy.
Dr Jitendra Singh noted that on the 30th of April this year, the India-Australia Joint Committee meeting on Civil Nuclear Cooperation was held in Mumbai , pursuant to a bilateral agreement.
Dr Jitendra Singh observed that nuclear energy is soon going to be a major cost – effective and clean source for the growing needs of energy, not only of India but the entire world. He said, with the bilateral trade between the two countries having grown by over 10% in last five years, reaching 27.5 billion Australian Dollars, the prospects are bright for engaging with Australia in a mutually beneficial cooperation.
