JAMMU, Feb 5: Two persons were arrested today by the police for assaulting on duty doctors and paramedics in Surgery Ward of Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu.
Sources in GMC Jammu told Excelsior that a patient namely Junaid Ali, son of Haji Doda, resident of Gassi, tehsil Thakrakot, district Reasi, was admitted in Emergency Unit of the Hospital few days back following some injuries received in assault case and this morning, he was shifted to Ward Number 6 of Surgery Department for further treatment of his injuries.
They said, “The patients was accompanied by around 20-25 attendants in the Ward and all were without face masks. As they were create nuisance in the Ward and breaching COVID protocol, a team of doctors headed by Dr Zahur Hussain (Professor and Head of Unit IV) while on round of the Ward requested the attendants to minimize their number so as to enable them to discharge their duties”.
Sources said despite repeated requests of the doctors, the attendants refused to leave the Ward and instead engaged into a verbal duel with one of the Post Graduate (PG) doctor and thrashed him badly. As some other doctors including Prof Zahur and paramedical staff intervened and tried to pacify them, they were also assaulted.
They said even the attendants of another patient of the Ward who tried to intervene, were also not spared by the accused. The doctors saved their lives by escaping from the Ward, they said, adding the female PGs were manhandled by the accused attendants.
Later, the aggrieved doctors submitted a written complaint to Head of Department, Dr Naseeb Chand Digra, who took up the matter with Principal, GMC Jammu, Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma. Acting on the complaint, Dr Shashi shot a letter to District Magistrate Jammu as well as SDPO City West Jammu, and requested to take appropriate action in the matter so as to ensure security and well being of medical professionals in future.
When contacted, SDPO Bakshi Nagar, Ajay Sharma said that on the basis of the complaint, a case FIR number 20/2021 under Sections 332/353/354 of IPC has been registered in police station Bakshi Nagar and the two main accused arrested.
