The news of attack on Sarabjit, a death row Indian prisoner in Kot Lakhpat jail of Pakistan is quite disturbing. Such kind of attack on an inmate who is already counting the days of his life is quite inhuman and barbaric. Only a few months back a Jammu based prisoner was beaten to death mercilessly in a Pakistani jail whose body was handed over to Indian authorities only after much struggle from this side. This is an indication of worst treatment being given to the Indian prisoners in that country. Such attacks cannot happen without the involvement or carelessness of jail staff. With these two incidents the scores of Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails might pass their days with increased fear of attack on them also. The government should take up this matter with seriousness with the Pakistan government to avoid any such incident in the future. The human rights organisations of both these countries should also raise this issue on proper platforms for security and proper treatment with the Indian prisoners in that country.
