Srinagar, June 23: Government today admitted that the developmental work of Udhampur Sports stadium has been lingering-on for last six years and said it should be handed over to State Sports council for further execution.
In a written reply to a question of Pawan Kumar Gupta in Lower House, Minister incharge Technical Education and YSS Department stated that the construction of Pavilion at Subash Sports Stadium, Udhampur was taken up by the PWD (R&B) Department in 2009.
An amount of Rs. 54 lakh was released by the Technical Education and YSS Department on different components which include Rs. 30 lakh for central pavilion of the sports complex. It was reported that quality of work was poor and structural safety was not being addressed, besides staircase constructed also collapsed.
“The then concerned Minister on his visit to the stadium directed for detailed report in the matter from Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur. The department also sought the report from Chief Engineer R&B Jammu. The work therefore got halted,” the Minister stated.
Further, the report of the Deputy Commissioner has been received by the department and is under examination, he said, adding however the action taken report from Chief Engineer PWD (R&B) is awaited.
“Meanwhile in the District Development Board meeting of district Udhampur held on May 14, 2016 it has been decided that the project should be handed over to State Sports Council for further execution. The Department will take a holistic view of the matter so that work can be started on the project,” the Minister stated. He also stated that the target for completion of indoor hall at sports stadium, Udhampur is September 2016.
