JAMMU, Jan 28: Amateur Theatre Group (ATG), one of the foremost theatre groups of the country, is organizing a 10 Day Theatre Festival, titled ‘Abhinavagupt Natyotsav’ at Abhinav Theatre from February 12 to February 21, 2016 as part of the year-long Abhinavagupt Millennial Celebrations.
ATG will stage eight plays during the festival and there will be seminars and lecture cum demonstration sessions also during the festival.
Abhinavagupt, philosopher, ascetic, and aesthetician, is an outstanding representative of the Kashmiri Shaivite monism. Abhinavagupt was a prolific writer on philosophy and aesthetics. He lived in Kashmir at the end of the tenth and beginning of the eleventh century A.D. Abhinavagupt’s Abhinava-bharati is a commentary on ancient Indian author Bharata Muni’s work of dramatic theory, the Natyasastra. It is the oldest commentary available on the treatise. In this monumental work, Abhinavagupt explains the Rasasutra of Bharata.
The Amateur Theatre Group has decided to hold four such festivals, including one at Srinagar, during the year as part of Abhinavagupt Mille-nnial Celebrations. A Committee has been constituted to oversee the arrangements of the Millennial Celebrations during the year. The members of the Committee are Khalid Husain (noted Punjabi writer), Ravinder Kaul (Theatre Critic), Esther Williams (Principal, Alexander Memorial School), Vikram Sharma (Theatre Director), Lalit Gupta (Art Critic), Madan Rangila (Theatre Actor) and Vijay Sharma (Art Connoisseur). The Committee will be headed by Mushtaq Kak, former Director of Shri Ram Centre of Performing Arts, New Delhi and a noted film personality.
Amateur Theatre Group is a leading theatre group of the country. It has been participating in a number of national, international and zonal theatre festivals organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi, Sahitya Kala Parishad (New Delhi), North and West Zone Culture Centre, Punjabi Academy, New Delhi etc.
