UDHAMPUR, Aug 19: Army today paid rich tributes to Late Maj Pramod Purushotam, the erstwhile PRO (Defence) of Srinagar who laid down his life in line of duty.
In utter disregard to his personal safety during the terrorist attack in Nov 1999 at BB Cantt, he had saved the precious lives of three Kashmiri journalists.
In recognition of the goodwill generated by Late Major Purushotam while he served as the PRO (Defence) a befitting rolling trophy has been conceptualized to be presented to the best performing Army Goodwill School in each academic year.
The trophy was unveiled by Lt Gen Subrata Saha, 15 Corps Commander in a solemn ceremony at Ziran Army Camp in the presence of Mrs Valsa Purushotam, wife of late Maj Purushotam who was the guest of honour and presented the trophy to the Army Goodwill School, Wuzur which was adjudged the best amongst 30 Army Goodwill Schools.
Mrs Purushottam expressed her pride at what her brave soldier husband had achieved and recalled how her husband was always so passionate about Kashmir and its people.
The occasion was attended by officials from the Army, civil administration, principals of all the Army Goodwill Schools and a number of media persons as a mark of respect and admiration of what Maj Purushotam stood for.
Speaking on the occasion, Lt Gen Subrata Saha thanked Mrs Purushotam for her fortitude and saluted the martyred officer. He also shared incidents as had been narrated by people of the journalist fraternity, of how Maj Purushotam had connected with the people of Kashmir a legacy that today’s generation of soldiers is striving to carry forward.
