Army jawan, 2 militants killed along LoC

Srinagar, July 11: An Army jawan was killed in a shootout near Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today while two militants of Al-Badar Mujahideen were shot dead on the LoC in Nowgam sector.
Army’s 1/3 GR and 100 battalion of Border Security Forces (BSF), who are manning the fence at 3 BEHAK forest area near Jumgund in Keran sector, intercepted heavily armed group of militants last night at around 12.30 am.
After being challenged, the group of militants believed to be infiltrators opened fire resulting in an encounter in which an Army jawan identified as Naik Arun Kumar Rai sustained serious bullet injuries. He was immediately evacuated to military hospital in the frontier of district. However, he succumbed to injuries.
Army today said that they have killed two Al- Badar militants in an encounter at Nowgam sector in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
General Officer in Commanding (GOC) 90 Div Lt General J S Nain told Excelsior that Army deployed along Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam Sector of Handwara foiled an attempt by Al-Badar Mujahideen to infiltrate during the night intervening July 8 and 9.
The GOC said that as the militant group was challenged, they opened fire on troops leading to a brief shoot out in which two militants were killed while they were retreating.
The Commander said that while fleeing back, the militants left weapons and war like stores behind. Large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered during the searches.
The GOC said that documents were recovered from their bags which revealed their identity as Mubashir of Leepa valley and Younis of Peshawar, both belonging to Al- Badar outfit.
In the meantime, Army has launched massive operation in Gulmarg sector in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district after inputs that 6-7 militants of LeT have infiltrated into the area few days back. Army has laid ambushes at several places for last few days but so far they have not been able to trace out the group.
